What we would have spun in May 2023

Queen Charlotte, The Mother, and FUBAR were the May 2023 titles worth a wheel click. The rest of that month was a licensed pile — here is how we would have filtered it.

This page used to be a wall of titles: every Netflix original that landed in May 2023, then every licensed film, then everything that left. That is the same list What’s on Netflix already published. It is not a reason to put ads next to the page.

What follows is what TV Roulette would actually have done with that month. Dates follow U.S. coverage from TIME and The Hollywood Reporter. Catalogs differed by country then, and they still do. Set watch region to the Netflix you can play tonight.

Three originals that earned a spin

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (May 4) was the only May original we would have treated as a “just pick this” TV spin — and only if the room already liked the mothership show. Six episodes. High quality. Do not mix it with a movie night; it is a weekend binge, not a ninety-minute closer.

The Mother (May 12) was Jennifer Lopez in an assassin movie in time for Mother’s Day. That is a straight movies + high quality spin if the group wanted action without a franchise. It is not subtle. It is finite. That is a feature on a weeknight.

FUBAR (May 25) was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first scripted TV series, a spy comedy with Monica Barbaro. Spin TV, keep quality high, and know you are signing up for a tone closer to a late-career action joke than to The Diplomat. If someone in the room hates that tone, pick a genre before you spin, not after the first result.

XO, Kitty (May 18) only if the household already had To All the Boys in muscle memory. The wheel is a bad way to “discover” a YA spin-off. Search for it or skip it.

The licensed pile is not a watchlist

May also dumped a lot of older films into U.S. Netflix — Austin Powers, Black Hawk Down, Captain Phillips, Chicken Run, The Croods, Léon: The Professional, Pitch Perfect. Those are real titles. They are not a reason to paste forty names under a heading.

On the wheel, that pile is what All + high quality is for: you might get Captain Phillips instead of an original you have already finished. If you specifically wanted a 1990s comedy, set genre to comedy before you spin. If you wanted none of the kids’ animation, do not leave format on All.

What left, and why a leaving list is the wrong product

U.S. leavers that month included Galaxy Quest, Rango, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, and My Girl. If you still needed one of those, you had a deadline. If you did not, a 40-line “leaving” dump did not help you press play.

The useful move on a leaving month is the same as any other: spin in your country. A title that left the United States on May 31 may still have been sitting in Spain or Brazil. Our old page did not say that. This one does.

How we would have set the filters

• Comfort / period drama: TV, high quality, after the 4th (Queen Charlotte).
• One movie, no homework: movies, high quality, after the 12th (The Mother) — or take whatever well-rated licensed thriller the wheel served.
• Group that wanted a laugh at a movie star: TV, high quality, after the 25th (FUBAR).
• Group that wanted chaos: bad quality, movies, one veto. May’s originals were not built for that night.
