What actually arrived on Netflix in January 2023

This page used to put Matrix Resurrections, Yellowstone, and Ozark on a January 2023 calendar that did not exist. Here is what we would actually have spun.

The old January 2023 post read like a guess. It placed The Matrix Resurrections on January 1, Yellowstone season 5 on the same day, Don’t Look Up on January 13, Ozark’s final season on January 20, and The Lost City on January 27. Those were not January 2023 Netflix premieres. Don’t Look Up was a December 2021 original. Ozark’s last episodes had already arrived in 2022. Yellowstone was not a Netflix show.

We would rather correct that than keep a confident, wrong list live. Titles below are checked against The Wrap, The Hollywood Reporter, and Den of Geek.

What we would have spun

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was already the movie people were actually opening on January 1 in many regions. If it showed up on a movies + high quality spin, that was a yes for a group that likes a talky mystery. It is a lousy pick if someone wanted a 90-minute action film.

You People (January 27) — Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Kenya Barris. A rom-com with a culture-clash premise. Movies, comedy, high quality. Finite. Fine. Not a “must,” which is why the wheel is allowed to miss it.

That ’90s Show (January 19) — only if the room had a That ’70s Show reflex. TV, comedy. A nostalgia sequel is a planned watch, not a discovery.

Ginny & Georgia season 2 (January 5) and Kaleidoscope (January 1) were the TV originals the internet actually argued about. Spin TV for those only if someone wanted a series commitment. Kaleidoscope’s scrambled-episode gimmick is a poor random-first-episode experience; if you want that show, start it on purpose.

Lockwood & Co. (January 27) is the January original we would have been happiest to land on as a genuine “we don’t know this” TV spin: teen investigators, finite season, high quality. It did not get the marketing of You People, which is exactly when a wheel is useful.

Licensed January 1, without the dump

The U.S. New Year’s Day licensed drop included Forrest Gump, Grease, Brokeback Mountain, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Top Gun, and several Rocky films. That is a real movies + high quality pool. Name five, not fifty. If the wheel hits Scott Pilgrim, play it. If it hits a Transformers sequel from the same pile, you have permission to spin once more.

What this page got wrong

• The Matrix Resurrections as a January 1 2023 event — no.
• Yellowstone season 5 on Netflix — no.
• Don’t Look Up as a mid-January 2023 arrival — it had been a Netflix original for a year.
• Ozark: The Final Season in January 2023 — the ending was already out.
• The Lost City as a January 27 Netflix premiere — that theatrical comedy was not a January 2023 Netflix original drop.

Wrong titles are not “engagement.” They are a reason a reviewer treats the blog as scaled filler.

How we would have set the wheel

New Year’s Day: movies, high quality, take the licensed classic if it is good enough. Late January: either You People as an easy movie or Lockwood & Co. as a series you might not have clicked. Do not “spin until Ozark” when Ozark is not even the month.
