Using watch region correctly (including VPNs)
How TV Roulette picks a Netflix country, when the automatic guess is wrong, and why a VPN does not change our catalog unless you change the dropdown.
Watch region is a catalog selector. It is not your language, your billing country, or a promise that we can see inside your Netflix account.
Get this control right and the wheel’s “Watch on Netflix” link usually lands on a title you can open. Get it wrong and you will blame the recommendation for a library mismatch.
How we choose a default
When the site loads, we ask our geo lookup what country your connection looks like. If that works, we pre-select that country in the dropdown.
If it fails — local development, a locked-down browser, a flaky edge function — we fall back to a locale default:
- English home → United States
/es/→ Spain/de/→ Germany/pt/→ Portugal/tr/→ Turkey
Those fallbacks are guesses for first paint, not a claim about where you pay for Netflix. Change them.
What the dropdown changes
Every spin (and the homepage sliders) should follow the selected country. We query availability for that territory. A comedy that is listed in Canada will not be in the Mexican pool unless it is also listed there.
We currently cover a few dozen Netflix countries in the menu — not every market on earth. If yours is missing, the closest honest option is a country whose library you actually use, not a random large catalog.
VPNs
Three situations:
You are not using a VPN. Leave the dropdown on the country you live in. You can ignore the rest of this section.
You use a VPN but Netflix still shows your home library. Some networks tunnel traffic without changing the Netflix country. Match the dropdown to what the Netflix app shows, not the VPN app’s flag.
You use a VPN and Netflix is clearly a different country. Set TV Roulette to that same country before you spin. Otherwise we will recommend a U.S. title to a session that is currently browsing, say, Japan.
We will not auto-follow your VPN. We only know the region you pick (and, on a good day, the country of the IP that loaded the page).
Travel
Hotel Wi-Fi in another country can make our geo guess jump while your Netflix profile stays on home. If you are travelling and still watching “home Netflix,” set the dropdown back to home. If you are using the local library on purpose, set it to where you are.
The rule is always the same: the dropdown matches the library you can play tonight.
Language versus region
You can read TV Roulette in German and spin the U.S. catalog. You can read it in English and spin Brazil. That is useful for bilingual households. It is confusing only if you assume the language switcher also swaps Netflix countries. It does not.
When a result is not actually available
If the watch link fails:
- Confirm the dropdown.
- Confirm you are logged into the same country’s Netflix.
- Spin again. Licensing changes, and catalogs are not frozen.
