How to pick a movie with friends using TV Roulette
A short process for groups: one region, one spinner, limited vetoes, and when to stop negotiating and hit play.
Picking a title with other people is a coordination problem dressed up as taste. Someone is hungry. Someone “doesn’t mind.” Someone has already seen everything. TV Roulette will not fix personalities. It will give you a process that ends.
Before anyone touches the wheel
Put the streaming device on the TV so the whole room can see the filters. Hidden laptop spins create conspiracy theories.
Agree, in this order:
- Whose Netflix. One country. See watch region.
- Movie or TV. A series is several nights. A movie is one.
- Genre or All. All is fine for a mixed group. A tight genre is better if two people already look bored.
- Quality. High unless you explicitly called a bad-movie night.
Write it down if the group is large. You will be quoted later.
Roles
One spinner. More than one person hitting the button is how you skip a perfectly good result “by accident.”
Everyone else votes. Yes, no, or spin again. “I don’t know” counts as spin again, and you only get a few of those.
A timekeeper (optional, highly effective). Ten minutes from first spin to play. After that, the last yes wins.
Veto budget
Give the group two vetoes. A veto is for “I cannot sit through this,” not “I was hoping for something more elevated.” Once they are gone, nos have to be reasoned (“too long,” “wrong language for this crowd,” “we finished it last week”).
If you allow unlimited vetoes you are back to scrolling.
What to do with a yes/no split
Two vs two: spin again. Do not average the IMDb score in committee.
One holdout after two other yeses: play it, unless they still have a veto. The holdout can cook or pick the next night.
Everyone shrugs: that is a yes. Shrugging is how groups actually choose. Take the gift.
Remote friends
If people are watching in different countries, the wheel cannot invent a shared catalog. You have two honest options:
- Pick the country all of you can open (often a Netflix original-heavy night), or
- Drop the idea of one title and compare spins for fun, then each watch locally.

After play
If the film worked, you do not need a retrospective. If it did not, change one filter next time — usually genre or format — not all of them. The process only gets better if you can tell what you changed.
